Chemicals fire human emotions. Without these chemicals, are we merely non-thinking, non-sentient vessels housing loose, vacant organs, incapable of love and expression, merely cold, calculating beings? If so, who are we, and what makes us “love”; these chemicals that are beyond our control, or some other extemporal utterance?
And so lays the foundation to award winning British playwright, Lucy Prebble’s (Enron: The Musical) ‘clinical romance’.
Set during a drug trial, this often amusing and always moving play, witnesses the intertwining lives of four of its participants; Tristan, Connie, Lorna, and Toby. Succumbing to emotions beyond their control, Tristan and Connie have to decide whether their attraction of love is real or merely narcotic. In doing so, throw the trial into turmoil and affecting the lives of all four participants.
The Effect explores questions of love, sanity, the mind, pharmaceuticals and the inevitability of physical attraction.
