Midlife Crisis: how do six women grapple with midlife

Simon Frost • February 17, 2022

Midlife Crisis is a funny and poignant play which looks at how six women grapple with midlife and the issues it raises. The play is written and directed by Janette Evans and continues Titchfield Festival Theatre’s 2022 New Play Season.

Midlife Crisis explores how the dawning realisation of midlife hits each of us in different ways and at different times. Midlife, after all, is not an exact science. In this play, the audience can join the fun, reflection, and realisation of women who are trying to manage the next assault course of life. Their humour, friendship and keen wit helps on the journey – but even they are surprised by Mandy.

This is Janette’s fourth play written for TFT. Janette said,

“The characters in Midlife Crisis are inspired by some of my friends, colleagues and people I have met, the stories I’ve heard and my personal experiences… with obviously the names changed!

“I love the process of writing the different roles in each play. Set in a book club the characters share views on books, life and love. Mandy is not really heard; she is quiet and doesn’t like to push herself forward. Most of her fellow book club members are nice to her…though Fran can be a bit harsh. Susie tries to understand Mandy and to have some affinity with her, due to Susie taking care of her own Mum. Mandy’s family are demanding, she starts to think about ‘me time’, so something has to give.”

In terms of the other characters, Cath is an energetic woman who has retired and helps with the local environment. Susie works in a travel agents and dreams of going on holiday. Lizzie has gone part time, and is intent of ticking things off her bucket list. Gerry owns a landscaping business; she is strong and down to earth and loves the bones of her family. Fran is in senior management, independent, single woman who works hard and plays hard too. Mandy is married, has three children and several grandchildren.

Midlife Crisis is very funny, laugh out loud funny, but also considers a range of issues we all have to think about, especially as we age and at times it touches raw nerves and makes you think, reflect and maybe even gulp! I can’t wait for audiences to meet my six women and share their, laughter, pain, fears and friendship.”

Titchfield Festival Theatre’s production of Midlife Crisis opens at the Titchfield Festival Theatre, St Margarets Lane on Wednesday 9th March until Saturday 19th March 2022. The shows start at 7.30pm. There is a matinée performance on Sunday 13th March 2022 starting at 2.30pm.
