A spectacular production of the beloved musical

that will fill your heart with joy and song

Titchfield Festival Theatre (TFT) is delighted to announce its upcoming production of the beloved musical which turns 60 years old this year, The Sound of Music. The nostalgic, family friendly musical is on stage in the Arden theatre from 11 – 19 April 2025.

The Sound of Music follows the inspiring journey of Maria, the spirited postulant who brings joy and music back into the lives of the von Trapp family. Featuring timeless classics like “Do-Re-Mi,” “My Favourite Things,” and “Climb Every Mountain,” this enchanting tale of love, courage, and the power of music is perfect for audiences of all ages.

Kevin Fraser, TFT’s Artistic Director is directing the musical.

"We always look for a family friendly, joyful musical at this time of year and Sound of Music certainly fits that bill. I remember watching the film in 1965 when I was just nine in Aberdeen, it was the first film I ever saw!"

This production also has a special significance, potentially being the last performance in the Arden Theatre, as the theatre awaits the outcome of its Planning Appeal. "We have assembled a stunning cast, including an ensemble of over 20 nuns, creating a truly awe-inspiring depth and resonance to the sound," Kevin explains.

The production places a strong emphasis on the vitality and exuberance of the children, crucial to the story's charm. "Both teams of children are rehearsed together, ensuring continuity," says Kevin. "Our choreographer is brilliant, breaking down scenes to make them accessible for the children, and it's wonderful that our Liesl is also one of the TFT youth theatre teachers. The children also know me, helping them to feel comfortable and enthusiastic; I always encourage them to get involved in our main productions, like this fabulous musical."

Addressing the challenge of presenting a fresh perspective on such a well-known musical, Kevin reveals, "I try not to follow the script's traditional directions. This allows us to approach the show with a fresh perspective. We've rearranged some elements, aligning more closely with the film, and bolstered our chorus with the TFT Festival Chorus. While we may not have a fly tower, we've utilised a revolve and a huge video wall to magically transform the scenery, bringing the Austrian mountains to life."

The Sound of Music at Titchfield Festival Theatre promises to be a unique and unforgettable theatrical experience: "I suspect there will not be a dry eye in the theatre. The music is astounding, and our singers are frankly outstanding. For me, it's particularly emotional. We have had to “Climb Every Mountain” to ensure Arden’s survival as a theatre. On top of this it was particularly moving and humbling for me to watch as the whole cast clapped and cheered as I returned to directing after my stroke which laid me low midway through rehearsals. I just know that audiences will adore this production."

The Sound of Music is performing in the Arden Theatre at Titchfield Festival Theatre between 11 – 19 April 2025. For more information including booking tickets please go to http://titchfieldfestivaltheatre.com/ or contact our Box Office on 0333 666 3366.
