12 Angry Women: It is 1974 and twelve female jurors gather to deliberate on a case

12 Angry Women is a brand new play written for Titchfield Festival Theatre by Sassy Harvey, inspired by the famous story of a similar name featuring twelve male jurors.

12 Angry Women follows 12 female jury members in 1974 as they deliberate on a case. A woman is accused of lying. She claims that the men gang raped her on holiday and consequently stands trial for making this allegation up.

The twelve jurors convene in the claustrophobic jury room to decide. However, having nearly reached a unanimous verdict of guilty, a single dissenting voice – “Juror Number 8” – instigates an insightful, but emotionally charged, examination of the facts. Then what appears to be an open and shut case soon becomes a dilemma for the twelve, as their prejudices and preconceived ideas about the accused, the trial and each other turn the tables every which way. Is there enough reasonable doubt to acquit?

Sassy Harvey directs 12 Angry Women and said,

“I loved reading 12 Angry Men, which inspired me to write my own play. The court case in 12 Angry Women is a story of how women discriminate against each other. It is an exploration into attitudes towards women in the 1970’s and how this impacted on the way females treated each other at that time.

“Working with an all-female cast and crew is great fun. It has been a passion project that has brought together a sense of female empowerment and collectiveness of female creatives. It has been wonderful to share stories, facts, opinions and celebrate in the power of women coming together. With International Women’s Day in March, starting rehearsals within a show like this one has been a great experience. Showing us how support, understanding and the importance of sharing our stories are in the ever changing views of women. I can’t wait to show what we have created.”

Titchfield Festival Theatre’s production of 12 Angry Women opens at the Titchfield Festival Theatre, St Margarets Lane on Monday 25th April until Saturday 30th April 2022. The shows start at 7.30pm.
