ART: A bright thought-provoking comedy

Simon Frost • April 18, 2024

What happens when a friend buys a painting that is an entirely white canvas – is it art?

Set in three separate apartments in Paris, ART by Yasmina Reva is an award-winning play which took the West End and Broadway by storm when released in 1996. ART is on stage at Titchfield Festival Theatre from 21 – 25 May.

When Serge spends an extortionate amount of money on an all-white modernist painting, his close friends Marc and Yvan are baffled. Serge thinks it is art, but his friends remain unconvinced. Can the three friends manage to agree without a dangerous rift occurring? ART, a bright thought-provoking comedy, will have you rethinking what art really is.

India Jacobs is the director of ART:

“ART is a fun, feel-good play that makes you think! The all-white canvas is much more than it seems, bringing hidden feelings to the surface between the three friends and rocking the balance of their friendship.

“Each character reacts in a different way to the painting; and the clash between the personalities is clearly apparent, with the value of the painting often at the centre of their arguments. The audience will pick up on a lot of the pent-up anger and emotions between them.

“ART is an intelligently written fast paced play with issues and concerns that a lot of people will relate to. Audiences will enjoy the humour, and feel the emotions from the different characters. It will be interesting to see which side the audience is on!”

ART performs in the Acorn Studio at Titchfield Festival Theatre from 21 – 25 May 2024. For more information including booking tickets please go to http://titchfieldfestivaltheatre.com/  or contact our Box Office on 0333 666 3366.
