Brush Up Your Shakespeare: Kiss Me, Kate with an 80’s twist

Kiss Me, Kate comes to Titchfield Festival Theatre this September.

Set both on and off-stage during a production of a musical version of The Taming of the Shrew, Kiss Me, Kate revolves around the tempestuous love lives of actor-manager Fred Graham and his leading Lady and ex-wife, Lilli Vanessi.

 

This time the comic love story has an 80’s twist, complete with costumes from that decade and an exciting musical score adapted to give a period feel by TFT’s inhouse music director Daniel Brown.

 

Directing Kiss Me, Kate is Sassy Harvey who is also TFT’s Youth and Outreach Coordinator. Sassy said, “Kiss Me Kate is going to be a great show, and pays homage to the sparkling wit of Shakespeare. It is above all an irresistible celebration of the joy and madness of working in theatre. Of course, the power struggles between the genders will be there… although there will be plenty of humorous moments in the show, too.

 

“I am delighted that we have such a fabulous group of actors for this production, with a strong mix of experienced Shakespearian performers as well as our talented musical artists. Indeed, half of the cast are entirely new to Titchfield, bringing fresh interpretations to many of the various characters.

 

“We have kept all of the original music and script, the only difference being that the show is set in London not Baltimore. Cole Porter's witty, jazz-inflected score features hit after hit, with show-stopping numbers including ‘Brush up your Shakespeare’ and ‘Too darn hot’. We can’t wait for the curtain to go up!”

 

Titchfield Festival Theatre’s production of Kiss Me, Kate opens at the St Margarets Lane, Titchfield on Wednesday September 8th running until Saturday September 18th, 2021. Evening shows start at 7.30pm. The matinée productions are on Saturday 11th & 18th September 2021, and Sunday 12th September, all at 2.30pm.
