Ealing comedy classic The Lavender Hill Mob comes to Titchfield

Simon Frost • November 8, 2021

Inflation may have dented the allure of this 1m bullion heist, but the Ealing comedy classic The Lavender Hill Mob is still 24-carat gold.

The Lavender Hill Mob is both a joyous comedy and a tense thriller – one of the most famous of the 1950s Ealing comedies. An unassuming bank clerk, in charge of gold bullion deliveries for almost 20 years, hatches a plot to steal a consignment. His plan comes to fruition when a lodger who owns a small foundry making Eiffel Tower paperweights arrives at his digs.

Many theatre goers will be familiar with The Lavender Hill Mob from watching this gentle comedy at the cinema and on tv. However, the play will appeal to younger audiences too, due to its madcap humour.

Kevin Fraser is Artistic Director at Titchfield Festival Theatre and is also directing the play. Kevin said, “The Lavender Hill Mob is a real family show that many people will enjoy. Our version of this classic film involves a fair amount of improvisation, which the cast is enjoying hugely and makes it a great play to direct, act in – and to watch! There will be lots of original scripting which we have devised into the production.

“In the play, we have used snippets from the actual movie and will use these on a screen at the back of the theatre, to help explain where we are and what’s happening.

“Rehearsals have been tremendous fun; there are a total of eight cast members playing 40 odd characters in the play. There has been lots of laughter; I am sure that our patrons are going to love the show.”

As well as directing, Kevin is performing too, playing the part of Dutch, one of the robbers - and other characters…. It promises to be a busy night and a fantastic production.

Titchfield Festival Theatre’s production of The Lavender Hill Mob opens at the Titchfield Festival Theatre, St Margarets Lane on Wednesday 10th November until Saturday 20th November 2021. Evening shows start at 7.30pm. Matinée performance Sunday 14th November 2021.
