“I have loved and been in love. There is a big difference.” - Katharine Hepburn

Him & Me – The Tracy & Hepburn Story is a new play by Charly Armstrong and Dan Scott, the latest production to be streamed by Titchfield Festival Theatre. It tells the interesting story of the relationship between actors Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy.

The play is to be streamed every evening at 7.30pm from 25th to 31st January. This week, we caught up with Charly and Dan to find out more about what inspired them to write and direct this production.

What inspired you to write the play? Have either of you been admirers of Katharine and Spencer?

We both shared an interest in old Hollywood and had seen a number of Tracy and Hepburn films in the past. We found the amount of misinformation about the pair very frustrating and wanted to present their story in a much more accurate way.

Have you any particular films or performances from either actor which you have especially enjoyed, or which influenced the writing of this play?

We definitely looked to Woman of the Year and Adam's Rib for inspiration, especially with regards to their relationship and the pacing.

The Old Man and the Sea and Bad Day at Black Rock were used to help develop the characterisation of Spencer. For Hepburn we looked at The Philadelphia Story and The African Queen.

Both Guess Who's Coming to Dinner and On Golden Pond determined the nature of our play's ending.

Why do you think this story is so interesting?

It's a really heart-breaking story, and very complex. They were such an unlikely pair, but somehow it worked... despite the dysfunctionality.

Why do you think patrons will wish to watch it?

Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn are old Hollywood icons, and brilliant actors. And who doesn't like a bit of a tragic romance every now and then?

How has the rehearsals and production been different compared to preparing for a stage production - from a director's perspective and an actor's?

It wasn't too different as we weren't making a movie, rather a filmed stage production. But it was still a new medium for us and very exciting.

Rehearsals were made more difficult thanks to restrictions but being lock downed together gave us the rare opportunity to focus solely on writing and research, something which we wouldn't otherwise have had.

We feel very lucky to have TFT as it has allowed us to keep doing what we love safely during this pandemic. We also have a wonderful crew and online support network who have been ready to help out whenever we have needed them.
