Man of La Mancha: a musical based on Cervantes’ classic novel Don Quixote

Simon Frost • September 12, 2022

Man of La Mancha is based on the story created by Miguel Cervantes, the Spanish Shakespeare, called The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha.

Man of La Mancha tells the story of an old landowner who believe he is a Knight-Errant and goes on various adventures with his hapless squire Sancho Panza. Opening on 14th September, this funny, poignant and award-winning musical is performed at Titchfield Festival Theatre. Come along to watch as one man refuses to give up his impossible dream.

The musical Man of La Mancha is loosely based on the two-part novel published in 1614, becoming an immediate bestseller at the time and has stayed a classic ever since. The musical version has all the aspects of the novel condensed into two acts. There is a superb melodic score including To Dream the Impossible Dream, which has now become a modern day standard having been covered by just about every notable singer you can think of.. together with many other toe-tapping numbers.

Kevin Fraser, TFT’s Artistic Director, is directing Man of La Mancha. Kevin said,

“Titchfield Festival Theatre performed a version of Don Quixote back in November 2004 in a heated marquee in Titchfield Abbey, serving hot paella after the show. The show was brilliant and well received, so it seemed a natural progression to now direct the musical version of this classic book.

Man of La Mancha is important as it was really the first-ever modern novel published. Literary historians consider Don Quixote to be one of the most important books of all time, because of its modern elements of comedy, true to life realism and its use of language. The character of Quixote became an archetype, and the word quixotic used to mean the impractical pursuit. This musical has some brilliant, clever songs, superb modern dancing twists and the story is funny, uplifting as well as sad.

“I know that the audience will find Man of La Mancha funny, heartrending, and help people to see the dignity of every person no matter what their condition if they have a heart of goodwill. Quixote's character was to love and do right, no matter how badly he was treated; to have a good purpose in life and hold fast to hope while being a source of hope for others.”

Titchfield Festival Theatre’s production of Man of La Mancha is performed at the Titchfield Festival Theatre, Titchfield PO14 4BG on Wednesday 14th September to Saturday 24th September 2022. The shows start at 7.30pm. There is a matinée performance on Sunday 24th September 2022 starting at 2.30pm.
