Sitting Pretty: a bitter- sweet play that unfolds with beautifully humorous twists and turns

Simon Frost • September 6, 2022

Sitting Pretty by Amy Rosenthal is a play about two sisters in their fifties, both unmarried, who share a London flat.

Sitting Pretty is a poignant and funny play is full of magic moments and is performed at Titchfield Festival Theatre from 26 September to 1 October.

Nina is employed, brisk and dynamic whereas Nancy is plump, self-conscious and has found herself suddenly redundant. Nancy is urged by Nina and their faithful friend Max to find a hobby and ends up unwittingly stumbling into a job as a model for a life drawing art class full of interesting and eccentric individuals, including the philandering teacher, Philip. To Nancy’s surprise and horror she discovers that the life drawing means that she must pose naked….

Rose Malyon is director of Sitting Pretty and said,

“Sitting Pretty is a play with some wonderful characters, each with their individual charms and quirks. It highlights so many issues that we as humans can face throughout our lives including ageism, which is shown through Zelda and Nancy, both being used as the live models and both being compared in completely different ways.

“Nancy is unexpectedly liberated by the experience of posing naked, which she keeps a secret from her sister, but her new-found confidence unsettles Nina’s self-confidence. The sisters find themselves moving towards an inevitable confrontation as Nina faces her unhappy past and Nancy glimpses a possible future.”

Titchfield Festival Theatre’s production of Sitting Pretty is performed in the Acorn Studio at the Titchfield Festival Theatre, Titchfield PO14 4BG on Monday 26 September to Saturday 1 October 2022. The shows start at 7.30pm.
