Richard III: Shakespeare’s powerful play of political ambition, slander and misinformation

Simon Frost • June 19, 2023

Titchfield Festival Theatre’s Bard at the Barn Summer Festival continues with a compelling commentary on politics and naked ambition….

Richard III is the perfect villain, clothed in the armour of an unfortunate visage, armed with wit and pretty words which shoot straight at the heart.

Accompanied with a complete lack of empathy and a sack full of desire and discontent, Shakespeare’s Richard III is a fascinating character as well as an intriguing and entertaining bad guy; he has four powerful women who stand up to Richard and suffer for their temerity. Titchfield Festival Theatre’s production of Richard III opens on 27 June and continues until 6 July at the Great Barn, Titchfield.

Janette Evans is the director of Richard III:

“I saw Richard III at the RSC and I enjoyed their production so much I wanted to try and direct it myself. I have directed many plays for Titchfield Festival Theatre, however this is my first Shakespeare – and I enjoy a challenge.

Richard III is a powerful play indeed. It’s full of political ambition, slander and misinformation which are recognisable in politics today; although the slaying of your enemies is done in the media and not with a sword.

“Richard’s character is complex, fascinating – as well as repulsive. I think that anyone watching can’t help admiring him whilst at the same time being disgusted by him. It will be exciting to watch how these relationships come to life on stage. We’ve a great cast and I cannot wait for the opening night!”

Richard III performs from 27 June to 6 July 2023 at the Great Barn, Titchfield. For more information including booking tickets please go to http://titchfieldfestivaltheatre.com/ or contact our Box Office on 0333 666 3366.
